Intentions Induction Tutorial

Today I have had my first tutorial with my level five tutor, Fiona. We spoke more in depth regarding the textiles world that I would like to specialise in this year-I explained that I am very much interested in fine details of embellishing, combined with specific colour scheming, therefore both agreeing that embroidery/ mixed media is the appropriate choice for me. Where I can see myself in the industry boiled down to interior design or indeed designing fabrics for fashion- both of which sounded appealing.

We then began to talk about the research that I have been doing over the past week regarding which unit I would like to take for our Intentions' Unit. I have decided on the project entitled 'Visions of Sound', which in short is described: 'This project asks you to re-think the way in which you approach visual research, using music as a starting point". I have chosen this project as to me it sounds the most interesting- it is a very broad concept, and allows me to work in both literal and expressive ways. I feel as though the use of sound waves could be replicated well using both hand and machine stitchings.

Choosing a starting musical piece seemed difficult at first, however after listening to the example pieces I decided upon Danny Elfman's 'Alice's Theme', the soundtrack to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland production.

I have chosen this piece as my initial reaction to the piece allowed a surge of ideas as to where my work could possibly take me throughout the unit. My first ideas included the idea of the unknown, mystery, the state of dreaming, and a fairytale haze.

For my initial visual research I began by looking at the visualise effects on Itunes, that were shown whilst the song played. I was interested in the patterns that it created, thinking that I could incorporate the patterns in to a form of stitch.

Intentions Induction

This afternoon we have had our first Level Five lecture with Alex, a short 'welcome back' speech and a kick in the right direction for starting this important year. Straight away we were asked to write down which textile world we could see ourselves- I chose the embroidery/ mixed media option- this being because I have always been influenced by, and worked with embroidery, especially the embellishment side. I would love to be able to replicate some of the embellishment pieces that I see on say, Elie Saab/ Eline L.C Le Callennec's work, and this year I feel as though I will be able to have the chance to do this, using the industrial machines/ learning new techniques etc.

developing fluency. experiment. take risks. network.

Above is a list of the key points made during the lecture- ie the focus of our second year. Our first major project is 'Intentions', with three main points making  up this unit; concept, process, context. Within this unit there are five projects options- something that we are allowed to choose for ourselves. Our task for the rest of this week is to research each of the projects, deciding which we would like to base our first unit in- taking into consideration which unit we feel will be able to show our specialist textile worlds the most appropriately. We shall discuss this further with our level five tutors on Monday.

Level Five Summer Project

Once again it is September, which more importantly means that it is time to get back into the swing of textiles- now in second year. This is going to be a very exciting (and important) year- so I know that I really need to step up my game work-wise.

Over summer we were asked to do a two part project- firstly, a sketchbook showing my interests of medias/ materials in the textiles world, and second, a file of work showing designers/ artists that are currently in the art and design world that I can both relate to, and be inspired by.

Below is a selection of pages from my summer sketchbook. I feel that these pieces show my ideal medias/ materials in my own practice. I am very much interested in colour palettes and embellishment. I also enjoyed exploring the world of paints- something that through-out my earlier art years I always detested. My work focuses on the idyllic scenery around Cornwall, particularly the seaside.
